Named after a line in a poem I wrote called "Through ripples bright and shadows deep", I love how you can see a distorted reflection of my model's face in the undersurface of the water. She is laying on her side and extends her bouquet, her silk shawl furls around her, and beautiful reflections appear in the undersurface of the water. The colourful palette evokes both fragility and strength, holding the subject in a moment between above and below. The work recalls the dreamlike intimacy of Francesca Woodman and the underwater surrealism of Toni Frissell, situating my work within a lineage of photographers who transform the body into something both vulnerable and transcendent.
Taken during an underwater photo shoot at Bitter Springs, Mataranka, Northern Territory in September, 2024.
