My practice aims to capture ephemeral moments with my models in otherworldly environments. This captivating underwater photograph encapsulates my model, my daughter, semi-submerged in the water. Her red hair is heightened due to the contrast of the mossy background. She is partially submerged in water, with her upper face and head breaking the water's surface, creating a mirror-like reflection. She wears her white dress that looks quite purple in the shot and light filters through the water, casting intricate patterns of reflections and shadows on her submerged skin. The dark background enhances the focus of the interplay of light and water around her, giving the composition an ethereal and dreamlike quality.
Named after a line in an Emily Dickinson poem "Best Things dwell out of Sight".
This poem, and photograph alike, explore the idea that valuable things often remain hidden or unseen. The contrasts private and elusive attributes with those that are more public and visible, suggesting that true worthiness and significance often lie beyond the bounds of common observation.
Taken during an underwater photo shoot at Bitter Springs, Mataranka, Northern Territory.
