Artwork Description

Arbour in Bloom was inspired by the rose-covered arbour in our garden, a place that seems to come alive when morning light begins to filter through the trees.

The painting invites the viewer along a sunlit path towards the arbour, where white climbing roses become the focal point of the composition. Expressive, directional brushstrokes create a gentle sense of movement through the lawn, while cool blues, violets and greens describe the shrubs resting in shadow on either side. Beyond the arbour, layers of flowers, foliage and distant trees draw the eye deeper into the landscape beneath a soft blue sky.

In this work, I continued exploring the relationship between light and atmosphere. Rather than recording the garden exactly as it appeared, I rearranged elements of the scene to strengthen the feeling of being immersed in the space. The contrast between warm sunlight and cool shadow, together with layered colour and expressive mark making, aims to capture not only the appearance of the garden, but the quiet sense of calm and discovery that inspired the painting.

Like many of my recent works, Arbour in Bloom reflects my ongoing pursuit of light, atmosphere and the beauty that can be found close to home.

Artist Bio

I’m a Western Australian landscape artist based in Perth, creating original oil and acrylic paintings inspired by light, atmosphere and the natural world around me.

Although I always loved drawing as a child, painting became a serious part of my life much later. After years focused on work, family and competitive sport, I rediscovered creativity in the early 2000's and soon began studying oil painting at the Claremont School of Art in Perth.

Over time my work has evolved from careful observation toward a more atmospheric and expressive approach. Rather than focusing on strict realism, I’m increasingly interested in capturing the feeling of being immersed in a landscape — shifting light through trees, distant weather, quiet gardens and the changing colour of the Australian environment.

Western Australia plays a strong influence in my work, particularly the unique quality of light, native flora and open spaces that surround us.

My paintings combine layered colour, expressive brushwork and recognisable form, allowing areas of the image to soften and dissolve up close while still maintaining a strong sense of atmosphere and place.

Above all, I hope the work encourages people to pause, slow down and feel a sense of calm and connection to the landscape.
