This is starting to become a series! I've been meaning to paint a red-tailed black cockatoo for a while, but before I get to finishing a full bird, I decided to focus on the incredible head. I can't get past how prehistoric black cockatoos look, with their huge bulky beaks and keen eyes.
So although there's no dash of red in this painting, there are plenty of vivid yellow spots. The challenge with painting a dark animal is avoiding black and adding highlights while maintaining realism. I think this worked out OK here.
Please note that I intentionally left a white border.
