This painting is mainly done in gouache, which is an opaque watercolour medium that allows for these striking illustrative artworks. Here I painted a Goldfinch, which is a striking little bird that I love but have never seen in the wild. I wanted to move away from the clinical biological paintings I usually do, and add some movement and fluidity to this piece through the addition of oil pastels for the seed pods and some graphite for the feathers. This I felt gave the bird a warmth, and a personality. The cotton paper is deckled on the bottom edge, adding to the rustic nature of the painting.
This would look great in a white frame with white matting.
