The Softest Warning – a winding track cuts through pale, sun-faded grasses as a deep teal sky builds above the land. The light holds in the distance, soft against the coming weight of the storm. This painting rests in the moment just before weather shifts, when the landscape feels suspended and the world is caught between calm and change. It follows my ongoing exploration of stillness, distance and the quiet tension held in the open Australian plains.
The track had been travelled so many times it no longer led anywhere in particular. It simply wandered with the land, folding into the gentle rise of the grasses and disappearing again as the sky pressed lower. On this day the air held still, as if the world was thinking. A storm moved in slowly, gathering its colour in the distance, but the land didn’t rush to meet it. It waited, listening to the soft wind through the dry stems, letting the moment stretch. There was nothing to do but walk, breathe, and watch the weather drift towards you. Some days the sky feels close enough to touch; other days it feels like it might swallow the horizon whole. This painting lives in that in-between place, where time pauses and the road becomes the only certain thing ahead.
