Shirley in the Sun

Ladies of a certain vintage like to wear hats. They are stylish, they complement their outfit, and most importantly they protect their skin from the sun. Additionally, old ladies have a great desire to peer down at little children with their glasses perched on their nose. Searching and inquiring with their eyes, looking for some recognition of the child they once were long ago.

I create portrait art on canvas with oil paint. Carefully I observe, then slowly sketch form and outline. Then add colour, depth and contrast.

I want to attract the viewer with a likeness which is familiar and recognisable. Then keep the audience searching for character, personality and energy.

There is such a challenge in portraiture. There is such a thrill to see lines, strokes and colour transform into human form. I’m inspired by identity, story and temperament coming to life in art.
