A year in a one-roomed cabin with my partner, tucked in under a canopy of big trees, looking out over the Byron hinterland. It was a daily delight of feel sheltered and protected by the majestic gums, mango, avocado and pines; whilst peeking through to the distant vies of paster with horses and cattle.
There were flowering grevilleas and wattles in pinks, yellows and white in the foreground of the horizon's bold purple Border Ranges, the rising local Mt Chincogan, and the distant cousin Mt Wollumbin. I saw the landscape go from lush green to brown and back again as the rains came, forgot to come, and then finally showed up - much to everyone's relief.
The daily visits from a family of magpies or crows became my best friends, whilst swooping flocks of galahs, cockatoos, and easter rosellas kept the neighbourhood interesting.
All of this became my daily contemplation from my tiny verandah studio. Wondering at, and loving, the close connection to nature that living on land brings.
