Artwork Description

Our playground as children. Swimming, fishing, skiing championships, boat club, it was such a popular place, this particular spot is called "The Bend." I remember it as The Brewery Bend as well as we actually had a brewery up on the hill close to the river. Weekends there was the kiosk operator selling ice-cream and packets of chips, lollies. you name it. Music rang out from the speakers attached to the kiosk, children standing on hot sand, if they forgot to wear their thongs you could hear them yelling out to mum or dad to come pick them up, we teens used to rush to the little ones and pick them up if mum or dad couldn't hear them we also saved kids if they got into trouble in the water, it wasn't thought of as brave, we just looked out for each other. We had races across the river (a wide river) and the girls loved watching the boys jump off the 'cliff' on the other side of the water. You could hardly move on the densely populated white sand which covered the ground adjoining the water. This was the heyday of those wonderful childhood days.

Artist Bio

Based on Coochiemudlo, a smaller island situated approximately a kilometre off the coast of Queensland, between Brisbane and North Stradbroke Island, Millie, an award winning artist, is innately influenced by the abundance of foliage and wildlife that inhabit her locality.
Unbound to a sole medium or creative methodology, her depictions align with the subject’s intrinsic elements and resonance. Millie paints in a way that depicts her thoughts and feelings of the subject, which has helped her tremendously throughout her adult life and experiences.
“There is no grief as you embrace and involve yourself deeply within the subject of your painting,” Millie states after the passing of her only son in 2003. “Painting was a lifesaving form of comfort at the time of my son’s passing, and continues to be up to the present moment.”
Millie possesses a BA in Fine Arts from Charles Sturt University and a Masters in Art Therapy from the University of Queensland.
