The passage of life depicts a composition of articles representing every stage of life from birth, youth, adulthood, senescence and death. In Buddhism, this philosophy represents the truth of life. It is the definitive norm applies to all existence and reminds us that we should never be too attached to any of these worldly possessions. Likewise, we cannot stop our own body from aging and passing away.

The fruit bowl in this still life is decorated with a picture that is also drawn from the Buddhist belief called ‘four types of lotus’. This picture signifies four types of human intelligence and the ability to gain supreme enlightenment (nirvana).
