Botanical Wren

A beautiful blue wren perches amongst native flowers with a pattern of bottlebrush adorning its belly.

Fringe lillies and gum blossums fall freely while branches of hakkea and gumnuts surround the bird.

Playing with organic line and shapes and layering washes of watercolour this painting is filled with texture and depth.

There is a balance of bold and intricate linework on top of textured and light filled watercolour washes. Watercolour washes fill the spaces created by the ink line work and makes the piece look like stained glass.

Nicola is a Perth based multi-award winning artist and owner of The Artists Nook a collaborative artists team providing public and community art projects throughout WA. She has a BA Honours in Fine Art Printmaking from Gray’s School of Art in Scotland.

Her art practice encompasses printmaking and painting with a focus on linocut and watercolour. Nature is a constant throughout her work with native flowers and birds as subjects and motifs.

Art Nouveau and stained glass work have been an enduring inspiration and are echoed throughout her pieces. Juxtaposing flat ink against textural and tonal watercolour washes create a tactility in her still life and botanical pieces.
