Xanthe

Xanthe, Greek for yellow, is a watercolour and ink painting inspired by the Art Nouveau style.

A striking female figure is shown in a strong profile. Her hair is adorned with gum flowers, she has a zebra finch earring and kangaroo paws fill her clothing. A ring of pea flowers encircle her head.

Black ink linework hold the elements together while dissecting them into colour-filled shapes. Washes of subtle and rich watercolour add texture and tone.

Painted on 300gsm cotton rag watercolour paper with archival quality ink and watercolours.

Nicola is a Perth based multi-award winning artist and owner of The Artists Nook a collaborative artists team providing public and community art projects throughout WA. She has a BA Honours in Fine Art Printmaking from Gray’s School of Art in Scotland.

Her art practice encompasses printmaking and painting with a focus on linocut and watercolour. Nature is a constant throughout her work with native flowers and birds as subjects and motifs.

Art Nouveau and stained glass work have been an enduring inspiration and are echoed throughout her pieces. Juxtaposing flat ink against textural and tonal watercolour washes create a tactility in her still life and botanical pieces.
