Artwork Description

A Dip into History series explores the enduring presence of the Newcastle Ocean Baths, tracing a visual conversation between 1922, when the baths opened, and 2026. Through linocut printmaking, I was drawn to the remarkable constancy of this public place. Although generations of swimmers have come and gone, fashions have changed, and the city has evolved, the baths remain almost unchanged against the timeless horizon of the Pacific Ocean. The works respond to the exhibition theme by reflecting on memory, tradition and lived experience, where the ordinary act of swimming becomes something extraordinary through repetition across time. These images invite viewers to consider the baths as a place where past, present and future coexist—a shared civic space that holds personal and collective memories. The ocean and the enduring architecture evoke a sense of continuity that transcends a single moment in history.
