This portrait of a fox, titled ‘SOFT EYES, GOLD TOOTH‘ was a finalist in the Biblio Art prize, 2021. It was created in response to the psychological thriller, ‘The Others’, written by Australian author, Mark Brandi.
“When it comes to fox symbolism in literature, many stories portray the fox as a mischievous trickster. While in some cultures, the fox can be seen as a guide imparting messages and offering wisdom. Children’s books use these archetypes to represent different psychological aspects, in a familiar way that a young mind can understand. They can also help us understand the mysteries in our adult lives.
Eleven-year-old Jacob lives on a remote farm with only a dictionary, an encyclopedia, his father, and his own experiences to guide him. The fox is assigned personal symbolism, capturing the complexity of the adult world, after his father brings the young wild animal, wounded by their fox trap, home.
The fox's expression hints at Jacobs' recurring descriptions and the emotional meaning behind his father's “soft eyes and gold tooth” smile to suggest the tension in the father-son relationship; the careful treading around potentially explosive subjects.”
