In 'Nocturnal Mother' I am painting at night, when my creative imagination can run wild while my children are soundly and safely asleep. Although I have painted for over 30 years now, during the multiple COVID-lockdowns last year - creating was indeed my 'saving grace'. By day I would work, parent, teach, clean, cook and be utterly and completely exhausted. Life was intense and overwhelming. A time of great uncertainty. In stark contrast, at night I became lost in a peaceful trance of creative meditation.
The lamp has both a literal and figurative meaning; while being the main object source of lighting in this self portrait, it resembles how the creative process and nightly creative routine would be all I needed to keep going - that little light spark, my source of replenishment, giving me more than enough enjoyment to keep going and living 'groundhog' day within my 5km radius. Sitting down to a blank canvas, awaiting and escaping with a world of creative possibilities.
