Artwork Description

I live in Castlemaine, a town surrounded by the remains of the gold diggings, where your claim was defined by an 8 foot by 8 foot boundary. Shafts were vertical, but frustration and envy could lead to angled and horizontal offshoots. In the later years, water sluicing and explosives created added dangers. This is a carefully rendered illustration taken from the Pictorial Gazette edition of December 1861 remembering the catastrophic event of the previous November. God rest their souls !!!
