The Birdsong II

The Birdsong II is from a series of works that aims to capture, through semi-abstracted paintings, the mystery of time through the patterns in nature.

The painting is created by layering and sanding that reveals an interestingly textured surface.

The works are based on the wind erosion patterns in the sandstone rocks that is common in the area and the visual representation of birdsong. The works aim to visualise a feeling that art, life and geological time are all intertwined and that the landscape retains a memory of life across deep time.

Creating my artwork is my way of honouring the natural places that helped me learn and grow and that have inspired a lifetime dedicated to the natural environment. This work begins in the bush, with these things: to look, to enjoy, to touch, smell and hear life around me, where I know it best, in the place where I grew up, on Sydney sandstone country, on unceded Garigal/Kuringai land.

I hold a Master of Art from UNSW Art & Design, and my work is informed by a background in biology.
