Silver Linings 2022, Original oil painting on cradled timber, framed in Raw oak, ready to hang.
I am interested in painting nature morte that are full of life and raw energy. My intention is to create ‘drawings in paint’, keeping them more in the spirit of a sketch.
The sun - when I work outdoors in my courtyard - is a tripod light. I pass things into and out of it - wait for it to throw the right shadows and play with its shining onto porcelain or glass. It is, in effect, my collaborator, and having grown up in the UK - I’m still awed by its intensity.
The title ‘Silver Linings’ refers to the ability to find gratitude and positivitity in adverse situations, and is also a reference to the sun kissed underbelly of the Banksia leaves featured in the still life set up. I am drawn to simple found objects like glass jars, and the botanical specimens growing in the streets and back alleys around my neighbourhood in Sydney’s Inner West.
