Artwork Description

Inspired by the repeating patterns in nature and our connection to the all-encompassing force of life. This work was created with water from the Pacific Ocean US, several layers of fluid acrylic paint, acrylic glazing, and spray paint.

This series celebrates the transformative essence of the natural world, where earth, air, water, and light harmonize.

Each painting is created with a small amount of water gathered from the earth's oceans, rivers, and lakes. The concept of adding water from natural sources to each piece is to add the energy of life to the work.

Harnessing the radiant allure of gold and utilizing my process of controlled chaos I create organic cell patterns, and fluid compositions that ebb and flow, capturing the magnificence of nature – from a gentle sunrise glow to rustling leaves and serene water ripples. Each artwork in this collection embodies the alchemical journey, where the line between the physical and metaphysical worlds blur and ordinary elements transcend to reveal the extraordinary.

In Alchemy, gold acts as a catalyst for metamorphosis as I aim to encapsulate nature's ephemeral, transient, and fleeting aspects. Beyond its rarity, the metal's worth lies in its ability to mirror the beauty of our environment, illuminating hidden patterns and sacred geometries that underpin existence.

Alchemy (noun)

al·che·my

: a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of the base metals into gold, the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means of indefinitely prolonging life

: a power or process that changes or transforms something in a mysterious or impressive way

: an inexplicable or mysterious transmuting

The long route to English for alchemist began with the Greek word chēmeia, which came from the word chyma (“fluid”), derived from the verb chein, meaning “to pour.” It then passed to Arabic, which added its definite article al- (“the”) to the Greek root.

Artist Bio

Broughton is an internationally collected Abstract Artist living in Denver CO. She obtained her BFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2011. Her artistic ambition, however, began long before college and is also her current livelihood; pulsating in the plethora of artwork on canvas. Formally taught by her Grandmother Grace, who was a professional portrait artist, Broughton went on to excel in the arts throughout grade school and beyond. A post-college career in Hospitality Design taught her business sense, enhanced her work ethic, and reiterated personal values which nudged her in another direction.

In March 2014, Broughton began her career as a visual artist. She has exhibited in group and solo shows in the US, as well as in the UK and Australia. Her work is included in private collections all over the world including Germany, Australia, Spain, London, Canada, Dubai and Mexico. In addition, Shaylen has worked with several nonprofits, leading community art projects such as large-scale interior and exterior murals and after-school art programs.

In recent works, Shaylen has begun exploring new mediums, including the use of natural water sources to accomplish fluidity in her compositions.

Each painting is created with a small amount of water gathered from the earth's oceans, rivers and lakes. The concept of adding water from natural sources to each piece is to add the energy of life to the work. The Biomorphic patterns seen throughout Shaylen’s work is a representation of natural forms that repeat in nature, and the connection between all life.

This work is created in several layers of fluid acrylic painting, acrylic glazing, spray paint, and an original medium formulated by the artist in order to create cell patterns.

“With various mediums and techniques, I have created a process that is both chaotic and controlled. Through this balanced process of controlled chaos, I am able to collaborate with energy outside of myself, ebbing and flowing, I move with my intuition, intention and breath. The end result is a visual interpretation of my conversation with the ethers. A visual meditation.”

Through Abstract expression, she works to connect with the flow of life; delving deep into black bottom oceans; ascending curiously towards infinite stars, and ultimately discovering the divinity within ourselves. Her art is simply the all-encompassing Mother Nature, emerging through her fingertips.
