This oil painting was painted from across the bay at Spiky beach looking out to the "Hazards" and Freycinet National Park on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia.
The view from Spiky Beach on the East coast of Tasmania across to Freycinet national park and the Hazards is quite spectacular. The Hazards are said to be named after a local whaler, African American Captain Richard Hazard, who was reported as whaling in the area in 1824. On this day, I started my initial sketch of the Hazards from Spiky Beach. I could not help but notice how treacherous the seas were. I imagine navigating a ship around the Hazards in these enormous seas might prove difficult. I couldn't help but wonder if perhaps the Hazards have another meaning. I suspect the Hazards have changed little since Captain Hazard navigated these waters and perhaps; they provide a time capsule for modern sailors looking to glimpse the past, as they too navigate these waters.
