Artwork Description

Compelled to depict the landscape and horizons of my home, I am inspired by its form - from its broad horizons to the gorges and gulleys of the Blue Mountains National Park.
I like to get lost in painting, get messy and challenge myself with different subjects and materials. I am always looking for ways to capture light and shade, textures and atmosphere from my home studio or while drawing out in the bush.

Artist Bio

After a childhood filled with making, drawing, and encouragement to be creative, Susan's professional career began in the graphic design industry in Sydney after completing her university education in Wagga. Later moving to Brisbane then Chicago, and Singapore. A significant highlight in her career was working in the design department of The Art Institute of Chicago. Here, she merged her two passions—design and art—while gaining first hand experience of large scale exhibitions, featuring the works of Van Gogh, Gauguin, and The Treasures of the Medici, up close and behind the scenes.

Upon returning to the Blue Mountains, Susan rekindled her dedication to painting, focusing on capturing the landscapes and horizons of her home. Motivated by the ever-changing nature of the environment, she experiments with light, shade, texture, and atmosphere. Recently, she returned to still life painting - something that was a focus during university.

Susan has showcased her work in both group and solo exhibitions in the Blue Mountains, Sydney, and regional NSW. Her art has been well-received, resulting in sales and awards. Collections featuring her art and commissions span across Australia, the United Kingdom, the USA, and Singapore. As part of her artistic journey, she regularly participates in an annual artist retreat at Arthur Boyd's Bundanon Trust in the Shoalhaven, alongside a group of fellow female artists.

Balancing her roles as an artist and graphic designer from her home studio, as well as mother and taxi driver for her growing family, Susan cherishes the dynamic juggle. When the demands become overwhelming, she retreats to the bush to draw inspiration from the National Park.
