Babe In a Vase

Epiblema or Babe in A Cradle orchid is native to Western Australia. It is illegal to pick these beautiful flowers which is why I chose to depict them in vases and domestic settings. I love dreaming of vases filled with their wondrous beauty. The moth on the vase is studded with gems, to some the moth may not seem significant or worth treasuring but each and every tiny element of nature contains inherent value and is worth appreciating and protecting.

Born and raised in the small, remote West Australian town of Mukinbudin, Perth artist Tammi de Rooy has been consistently captivated and artistically influenced by
native flora and fauna. Portraying a diversity of wildflowers and Australian birdlife, her works are vivid, expressive and highly realistic depictions that persistently capture the imaginative mind. Her engaging artworks highlight the beauty and complexity of the organic environment, while sparking a desire to connect to it both physically and emotionally.

Expressing interest in the visual arts from an early age, Tammi would often sketch the scenes and imagery she observed around her parents’ farming estate. Later, she gained entry into the art specialist program at Perth College, where she eventually received her high school diploma, and went on to obtain a bachelor degree in graphic design at Curtin University. After working in the design industry for twelve months, Tammi travelled to Europe and retrained as a pastry chef, prior to opening a cake store with a connected café in Perth. After her business was destroyed in a fire in 2017, she returned to the visual arts as a means of coping with the loss, and eventually began pursuing it as a full-time vocation.

Since 2019, Tammi has produced a number of murals around Perth and regional Western Australia, and in 2022 won the Overall Award at the City of Gosnells Art Awards. Tammi currently divides her time between painting at her home studio in Southern River and parenting her three young sons.
