Artwork Description

This is a collaboration I did with another artist, Joshua McCrimmon, who's other works can be viewed at https://bluethumb.com.au/supermarketmonkey. Joshua draws, paints, sculpts, carves from wood, makes things from natural clay and plays music. He's one of the most creative people I know.
Joshua drew the initial drawing and then allowed me to attack it with my style.
The technique I use to create my work is similar to the ‘Automatic Drawings’ which was developed by the Surrealists to produce drawings from the unconscious. Only when deciding what colours to use do I consider what the final piece will look like which gives a balance of absolute abstract with no control and a considered deliberate piece of artwork.
As the work is abstract with a hint of the representational the viewer can interpret the work in any way they wish. It’s like looking at clouds with one person saying they can see a lion and another saying they can see a pineapple.
The titles I give to my work usually bare no connection to the work itself apart from how I’m feeling at the time of creating the work. As the work is not consciously meaningful, I don’t like to give the viewer an explanation as to what I think the image means or resembles but instead, an insight on how I felt on that day in my studio when the work was created.

Artist Bio

I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts at RMIT with Honours in 2017 after a long and uneventful career in administration. As an intensely prolific drawer, I explore themes of fragmentation and experiment with shapes and forms and the way they intertwine with each other.
Influenced by the haphazard automatic drawings from the early 20th century, I explore what can be done with drawing and painting while skipping over the line between the representational and the abstract.
