It was way too hot and the tide of summer lit the stones. Somehow the heat cut the atmosphere, like a blade that cuts a skin. In the grotto, where flowers bloom all night, there was water dripping. Amongst rocks that had turned to glass in the heat, a serpent appeared from a niche and slithered into the river. I realised then that my eyes were open.
