K'gari formerly known as Fraser Island is located off the Queensland coast is an easy days drive north of Brisbane with a short 500 metre ferry trip leaving from Inskip Penisuala. This remarkable island spans 120km in length and 24km in width, making it the largest sand island worldwide. As a result, the entire island is accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles.
It’s quite an exhilarating adventure traveling along the firm sands of 75 Mile Beach at low tide. On one side, you'll encounter lush, green vegetation, while on the other, the crashing surf creates a captivating soundscape that can easily mask the approach of 4WD vehicles. Additionally, it's important to keep an eye out for small aircraft since the beach serves as a designated National Highway with a speed limit of 80km/hr, as well as an airstrip for light aircraft.
K'gari is one of the only places in the world where planes are permitted to land on firm beach sand.
