Artwork Description

This large Canberra landscape celebrates the quiet magic of the bushland that surrounds our city — the grasses, distant blue ranges, open sky, native birds, and the sudden appearance of kangaroos moving through the landscape.

In the foreground, a small Superb Fairywren rests on a sunlit rock among native grasses and wildflowers. It is a tiny flash of blue in the middle of a vast Australian scene. Beyond it, the view opens into rolling green valleys, layered hills and soft blue mountains, capturing the spacious feeling of the Canberra region and the Brindabella landscape.

There are two kangaroos hidden within the painting. One sits high on the hill beneath the pale moon, turned away from us as if quietly watching over the valley. Another kangaroo is tucked among the grasses and wildflowers, partly concealed by the movement and texture of the foreground. These small discoveries invite the viewer to keep looking, slowly finding life within the landscape.

Painted in my contemporary impressionist style, this work combines expressive brushstrokes, rich colour, and a strong sense of place. It reflects the feeling of living in Canberra, where native wildlife is never far away — sometimes in the paddocks, sometimes on the hills, sometimes practically in our own backyard.

This painting is for collectors who love Canberra, Australian native birds, kangaroos, bushland, open skies and artworks that reveal more detail the longer you live with them.

Artist Bio

Hi, I’m Valentyna Crane — a contemporary impressionist landscape painter based in Canberra. I paint the feeling of a place: changing light, shifting atmosphere, and that sense of moving air that makes a landscape come alive.

My art journey began in Crimea, Ukraine, where I trained at the Samokish College of Fine Arts, and later completed a Master’s degree in Architecture and Landscape Design at V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University. Even earlier, my foundation was shaped by formal training at the Fine Arts School for children in Simferopol, where I studied drawing, composition, sculpture, decorative arts, and traditional painting techniques.

That classical background still supports my work today — strong structure and confident draftsmanship — but I paint with freedom: vibrant colour, luminous light, and expressive brushstrokes. My influences stretch from the Russian masters (like Repin) to the colour and light of Cézanne and Monet.

Now in Australia, I’m endlessly inspired by Canberra’s crisp air, open skies, and bush textures. I love creating paintings that feel uplifting and alive — pieces you’ll keep noticing and enjoying as you live with them.

My purpose is simple: to bring more light and beauty into the world, and to share that feeling with the people who connect with my work. If you have any questions, or you’d like to discuss a commission, I’d love to hear from you.
