Fiji Impressions 2

Here I'm aiming for a very serene piece, with warmth and simplicity. It is a reminiscence of a morning spent wandering the rock pools near our Fiji resort, feeling the warm sun on our backs, the bath-warm water, and marvelling at the colours of the fish and corals around our toes as the shallows stretched away to the ocean and horizon.

The top right of the canvas is deliberately left very minimalist, in a very light, warm beige to give the viewer lots of 'head space' for the mind & heart to find stillness and wander off over the horizon - or come back down to the brightly coloured earth life any time you're ready. Here, I loved the contrast of the earthy colours of the chocolate-brown rock and green seaweeds, against the neon blues and yellows of the fish. In particular, I have a strong memory of a fabulously weird pink jelly-like coral through which scurried tiny orange-and-blue shrimp. The incredible colour of the jelly set into the dark rocks sticks in my mind to this day.

The piece is glazed with gloss so to give it a watery sheen under light. It's on stretched canvas, ready to hang as-is, or will take all manner of frame colours.

In the tangle of the forest understorey, the connectivity of all things is most apparent to me. The sense of oneness and gentle alive-ness leads me to create layers of subtle, organic marks that invite the viewer in, like we lean in to listen when someone speaks softly. Paint is added or removed, responding to the moment; some things from life, some imagined, as though co-creating, until this pocket of wilderness is formed enough to hold us. Final flecks of colour are allowed to skip across the surface like sunlight on leaf, web or tiny wing. I’m exploring the concept of Nature as divinity, accessed by grounding in the wild-grown Earth that is the ancestral home for our species. The result, I hope, is artwork with a sense of the ethereal; that is somehow both divine-uplift and soft-landing – like opening the door to home.
