This painting of Sussanah Place, The Rocks was taken from a book of photos called A Certain Sydney 1900 by Max Kelly.
In the far background is the Whaler's Arms. This magnificent sandstone building began life in 1842 as the Young Princess Hotel, a local landmark in Millers Point, The Rocks. At some point in its life, it became the Whalers Arms Hotel, initially servicing the whaling community.
During the mid twentieth century it was converted into a general store, before being abandoned and left to deteriorate, helped by squatters who took up residence.
Following a complete restoration this piece of history can again take its place as one of the finest landmarks in the Rocks.
Painted on stretch canvas with painted sides
