A still life, the beautiful red gum blossom, simplified and magnified by placing a small piece in a glass jar. I love the colour and the form of the thick fringe of 'petals'. It speaks of Australia in summer, May Gibbs' bush babies and all the fabulous birds that feed on their nectar. I'm so pleased to see they are becoming a popular street tree in my neighbourhood.
I begin all my still life paintings with a pencil sketch to rough in the basic forms and highlights and then I mix a palette. I begin by layering paint thinly to build up colour and express all the gradations of colour I can see.
This painting is not framed, I have included a photo of it in a standard off the shelf frame as an example. Professional framing would better serve this work.
Colours may vary slightly due to monitor settings and differences.
