Lily Ponds

The Lily Pond provided a quiet secluded sanctuary during the lockdowns. I found a place where I could paint...undisturbed.
As the day unfolded the sun light moved across the pond, highlighting the different variety/colour of pads and lifecycle stage. One time I met a fisherman, catching bass. Apparantly they swim into the ocean lagoon and up into this pond area near Duffy's oval at Terrigal. I always surprise a water dragon ......

This is a tall vertical ( golden mean proportion) oil painting of a water lilies growing in a pond. It is a bright day with the bright blue sky reflecting on the water. We can see deep into the foreground water to the weeds and purple shadows below. On the surface the light dances across the green lily pads, highlighting the green pads and orange leaves that have fallen from above to take us across to other side.

This is a large horizontal oil painting on canvas measuring 122x91 cm (4x3ft) lily pads in a pond. Along the horizontal middle line the pads are bright green, before receding into the background. Ultramarine and cerulean blue water reflect the colour of the sky and white clouds into the foreground. In the bottom left corner there is tangled of dying stem and "drowning leaves". Rather than a romantic depiction of lily pads this painting is bold and colourful, containing all of the life cycles of the lily pads, from flowers to dying .

he lily pads have been bright curved discs of exuberant green for most of the season. With the Autumn cool comes the curling of the lily pads and change in colours. The last of the flowers and the myriad of buzzing and wriggling life above and below the water line are disappearing. The lily pads move from the excitable green of spring to bunker green, with some clocking out into golds, copper and brown. The Autumn stretch is upon the pond and the distant shadows begin to slide further across the surface. Leaf fall in the twilight to remind us all things must pass…until Spring

The medley of checkered lily pads stretch slow motion across the pond. They take me out to the middle of the pond like a green and yellow tapestry until they dapple into the shade from above. The tessellated pattern reminds me of a mosaic with pads as the small patchwork that form a larger picture. Lily pads to lily ponds is just echoes arranged so you believe you can travel to the other side. The lily pad carpet ride.

The rebound of life in early Spring with the emergence of new colours and activity in the pond is when the pond transforms by the hour. A time of fish close to the surface and new lily pads pushing each other for sunlight and space. The old colours of winter are being quickly renewed for the surge ahead. New beginnings for everything the Sun touches and life forces are in full swing. The pond is alive with lavish life.

LILY POND TRILOGY (triptych) Please Note: 3 paintings in this TRIPTYCH. Knowing that the finish is close, is bittersweet…..After spending months working on this large triptych 122x91cm oil painting it has become an extension of me. It began as external physical experience and now is a painting of that experience. Twice, I change the order of the work before settling on this order. Today , I want to add the golden light reminiscent of afternoon light, and reinforce the sweeping lines of the pads as they wander over the water. …connecting all the elements together ......individually and between all three paintings. Tomorrow , after sleeping on it and reappraising the work I will sign it. At that moment I know that I am letting go of the painting and it will ultimately pass onto somebody else and gain a new life, a new meaning beyond my original intent. That is the beauty of art. And the heartache to let it go. But go it must. Otherwise it is not art. Art is part of us, beyond us and shared by us. ‘LILY POND TRILOGY' Each Painting measures 120 x 90cm oil painting of a lily pond behind the oval at Terrigal. Terrigal lagoon extends under Terrigal Drive to create the pond. I started painting the lily pond during the Covid lockdowns. It was I place I could go and paint without being disturbed or interrupted because it is encircled by trees and bush unlike the openers of the beach. I would go and "hide" undetected except for a fisherman who came to the pond to fish for bass. Apparently the fish swim through the large pipes situated under Terrigal Drive, to the pond. My enjoyment for painting the pond has grown as I seek to capture what is above and below the surface reflections. Visible brushstrokes providing texture. Expressive and bold use of colour. Lily Pond Glide To sit and watch all the worlds and ways of lily ponds never gets old. You can feel yourself slipping into the micro worlds and becoming one with the pond. Your dragon fly mind skims in across the reflections, hovers across the pads and eventually buzzes along the flower hotspots. It is then that your attention finds the bank of sunlight further out in the deeper channels. And further still, across the reflections into the far side of the Lily Pond. .
